The Genesis Of The 360 Effect Custom Fly Tying Station 

In July of 1975, a couple of fishing friends and I were visiting Henry’s Fork of the Snake River, at Last Chance in Idaho, Henry's Fork of the Snake HR Millionaires Poolto fish all amazing fly and caddis hatches occurring that time of the year. What makes this so challenging is the fish are super selective during this period. We caught some, missed some, and had quite a few rejections of are flies. Two days later I was taking a break at Will Godfrey’s Fly Shop and there was an older gentleman tying “Extended Body Mayflies” that looked very realistic … that gentleman was known as “the wizard of Henry’s Fork’, master fly tier Bing Lempke.

Bing designed/created a tying platform device which made it quick and easy to tie extended body flies. It included a wooden base with two aluminum post holders, 12 1/2″ apart, one for the vise and another to hold an aluminum post with the keychain and clamp, which holds the materials that the extended body is tied on.

That evening, I met Bing on the river to fish with him, but I just watched him in action. He primarily was casting to large fish tucked in on the bank. I do not remember how many fish he caught that evening, it was quite a few, and the smallest was about 14″, and the largest was 22+”. He notified me that since he came up with this extended body pattern he had over doubled the number of fish caught previously using traditional and no-hackle fly patterns. He convinced me thoroughly and I have been tying and fishing them, especially during mayfly hatches, ever since tying and fishing my first one, and I’ve never looked back.

Quick Note:

The 360 Effect Custom Fly Tying Station was not designed for just tying extended body mayfly patterns, we use it to tie a variety of extended body patterns such as adult/nymph stoneflies, hoppers, dragon and damsel flies, streamers, caddis flies, chironomids, etc., just to name a few. Additionally, we tie all traditional flies using the same custom fly tying station. Tying flies can be extremely relaxing, artful, and satisfying, especially when you catch fish on a fly you tied yourself. I tied flies using his device successfully for over four decades. However, with the amazing evolution of tying materials, tools, and vises, it became problematic finding vises that would fit in the holders, or the chain and clamp could not reach the vise. The device was static. It was at this time we started thinking about developing a new device/platform that was dynamic and adjustable.
